The Association of Resident Doctors, Asaba, has joined other doctors under the Delta State Government’s employment to embark on a three day warning strike in demand for better welfare.

Speaking with journalists at Asaba, the President of the Association, Dr. Nwabunor Osifo, said the Association’s involvement is in solidarity with requests of doctors in the State.

Dr. Osifo lamented that the State is yet to implement the payment of Covid-19 hazard inducement allowances for their colleagues in the State despite assurances given by The Nigeria Governors Forum for speedy action.

According to him, the requests includes payment of Covid-19 inducement Allowances as well as consistent provision of Personal Protective Equipment used by doctors in treatment Coronavirus in the State amongst others.

He however noted that doctors managing the cases of Covid-19 in isolation centers are exempted from the industrial action as a relief to patients effected by the pandemic.

“ The three day warning strike as embarked upon by the Delta State NMA is for all doctors under the Government employment working in Delta State and the demand of the are clearly spelt out. The constant provision of Personal Protective Equipment to be used by doctors in combating Covid-19. The payment of the Covid-19 hazard allowance for the State Doctors.

“So based on this demand the Delta State NMA has called out all her doctors to embark on a three day warning strike effective Monday 27th July 2020  and as doctors working in Delta State, we have thrown our full weight in support of this action. We want to join them because an injury to one is an injury to all”. He said.

Continuing, “ Most of the isolation centers are already filled to the brim. But because we want to give this warning strike a human face and we expect that the needful will be done within the next 72 hours, the State NMA leadership has decided to exempt all doctors working in isolation centers”.

“ we want to appeal to the State Government that they should comply with the agreement by the Nigeria’s Governor’s forum to pay the Covid-19 hazard inducement allowance and improve the welfare of our State Colleagues because we are going through the hearculean task in fighting this ugly monster”. He added.
