Delta partners Coalition of CSOs to Commemoratate World Environment Day

Coalition of Delta State Civil Society Organization (CODELSCO) in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment, today, marked the 2023 World Environment day with a call on all relevant stakeholders  to promote the importance of  a clean environment.

  • The call was made during a one-day sensitization Workshop for MDAs and CSOs on waste recycling held at Asaba, to commemorate this years’ environment day.

Speaking during the event, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Environment, Dr. Mrs Minnie Oseji said Sensitization remains key to the  eradication of plastic Pollution.

Dr. Osaji expressed happiness at the level of cleanliness in the State, noting that Delta has been Working with Private Sector  recycling companies to ensure that plastic waste are converted to  usable products without posing dangers to the people.

Stating that the recycling activities in the State  will soon extend to all Local government, she noted that the Government has done a lot of advocacy  in churches, motor parks, schools and other public places  to inform the people of the significance of cleanliness to the environment.

She however observed  that there is needs to scale up  actions  against environmental pollution, maintaining that  innovation and monitoring are needed to achieve the desired goal of a clean environment.

In her opening remarks, Amb. Mrs. Carolina Usikpedo-Oliseowe, Executive Director, Noble Delta Women for Peace and Development International Said the day is about how to plan and Strategize on saving the planet.

“ it is celebrated to mark the importance of nature and should not be undervalued and it should not be taken for granted at any cost.” She added.

While calling on Government and other stakeholders to join hands in tacking the menace of plastic pollution in the Nigeria, She said  that the 2023 theme is a reminder that peoples actions on plastic Pollution matters.

On his part, the National Coordinator of Center for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), Comrade Sheriff Mulade opined that the goal of environmental cleanliness cannot be left for the government alone but collective effort of all citizens must be adopted to beat environmental pollution.

He also stated that Government should be proactive and not reactive to the recurrent issue of flooding in the country.

The theme of the 2023 world environment day is “ Beat plastic Pollution”
