Delta Journalists Embark on Campaign Against Trafficking In Persons

Delta State Journalists Against Trafficking In Persons under the sponsorship of Devacop Center for African Development yesterday held campaign against Trafficking in person in the State capital of Asaba.
Speaking at Iyanga and Wazobia Market respectively, the State coordinator of Journalists Against Human trafficking in persons, Comrade Anthonia Mowah said that trafficking in persons is a scourge that involves some people exploiting mostly women, girls and children for their personal gains.
Noting that trafficking in persons is happening within and outside the country, she encouraged parents not to fall prey to those who may want to take advantage of their low economic status to lure their children into suffering that could result to death.
Advising the traders to check the genuineness of their supposed helpers before indulging in any act that can endanger the lives of their children, she admonished youths that are willing to travel to do it legally in order avoid exploitation from sponsors of such trip.
Urging the traders to join the fight against trafficking in Persons, she said they can help by reporting any suspected case of human trafficking to ‘TALKAM’ or the nearest police station.
Sharing her encounter, Mrs Esther Osasa from Ndokwa East Local Government Area said “ You did say it on time. I know of a girl that was taken away two years ago but we have not heard from the people that took him away.
“ This almost happened to my daughter that works in a plaza. A man approached her and a friend of hers one day and asked her if she know how to plait hair and replied that she wasn’t too good at it yet. The man said it doesn’t matter and they can take them abroad where they can pay them plenty of money.
“They immediately agreed and followed them. When they were about to take a bus at head bridge, a woman like an angel came to my daughter and told her the journey is an evil one, then she ran away but her friend followed them and this is what saved my daughter.
“We later heard they took them outside the country but we have not heard from the friend till today. You people didn’t start saying this thing on time.
High point of the rally was the presentation of the campaign banner to the Chairmen of each of the market.
